No Small Feat Artwork Pt 3 - The Heartless Witch Arc

By request, I'm gonna show off some of the artwork for No Small Feat, a Midgaheim story my friends and I told through the TTRPG system Fabula Ultima. I drew a lot of characters and monsters for it, and my friends - in particular, @dragonzzilla, @scatha5, and @dinosaurana - helped line and color them so we'd have cute little sprites to use on our online battlemaps, which really helped sell the whole "we're playing an oldschool turn based RPG" vibe that Fabula Ultima's system is going for.

For this entry, we're going to talk about the characters and monsters I made for the first arc of the campaign.

Fabula Ultima's system has specific rules for Villains, i.e. antagonistic NPCs who are meant to be a significant and, if viable, recurring threat to our heroes. So when structuring this campaign, I designated one Villain per arc, in addition to a couple recurring ones who'd make their presence felt all throughout the story. Our starter villain was Sycoraxine the Heartless Witch. A spellcaster who lived close to the small farm town of Hansand, our heroes learned of Sycoraxine when the locals blamed her for the famine they were suffering. Our heroes of course went to confront her, only to find that she wasn't the source of the famine - though she did have the power to stop it. The hitch, of course, was that she had removed her heart, in both a literal and figurative way, to keep from feeling the pain of being ostracized by her neighbors for so many years. Our heroes recovered her heart and, in a tense and emotional standoff, convinced her to take it back, at which point she saved the town despite their past transgressions, and became beloved for it. A nice fairytale start to things in my opinion.

Finding Sycoraxine's heart was easier said than done, though, as she had her three familiars - i.e. arcane creatures she made a deal with to give her magic powers - hide them for her. Our heroes had to go to Hrumph the Troll, Preyain the griffin, and an incredibly foul-mouthed knucker dragon to find the heart in question, learning more about Sycoraxine's tragic past and connection with the wilderness around Hansand in the process.

There were encounters on the way to those three familiars. The bog home of Harumph was occupied by a Basilisk and a Swamp Kraken, and the beach the Knucker dwelled in had a young Sea Boar in distress as well as some man-eating kelpies. Finally, the mountain where Preeyain dwelled had a feral catoblepas whose oversized head was stuck in a ditch, as well as a VERY ornery phenex at the end of its lifespan who didn't want people messing with its nest.

And that was the first arc - a bit basic, but we were all learning the system and I wanted to give my players and myself the opportunity to experiment and figure it out. It also ended with the reveal of the campaign's big plot hook - Sycoraxine had in her possesion one of seven crown jewels, having found it on the body of a soldier who came to her for help when she was heartless and received none.

See, in Midgaheim, kings aren't just political leaders - they are magically bound to the kingdom they rule, and its health depends on them. Seven years before the start of the campaign, the king of Engelsex was killed in a failed coup, and the crown destroyed in the process. It can only be remade if the jewels are recovered, and in the meantime the kingdom will spiral into chaos as all the magic that would be flowing in the king is now going willy nilly and uncontrolled in all directions, like a river that burst through a damn. Only by reuniting all seven and crowning a new king could our heroes save the kingdom of Engelsex from falling into chaos and ruin, and so they set out with a new mission: find all seven crown jewels and, hopefully, a person who'd be worthy of the crown.

the knight class & its connotations

"the active exploit class, the knight’s job is to “protect their aspect or to protect with their aspect”. they will often end up protecting their allies who lack in the knights own aspect, and these protective tendencies are why they are often seen helping with frog breeding. typically, they are also protectors of the aspect itself, making sure it cant be destroyed in the session. all this protecting makes the knight's challenge learning other's capability in their aspect, growing to know that they are capable themselves."

knights arent as self-introspective as other active classes. lets compare it to a mage & a maid. aradia, maid of time, was busy visiting and "cleaning up" centuries worth of doomed timelines. as a play on words she was made of time, and very connected to her own aspect in that sense. sollux, mage of doom, knew a lot about sgrub (aka the game that would bring their doom) and although like a typical mage he had emotionally dealt with this dread, he still worked hard to split the trolls into teams and start their game, being very active and kind of confident in/with his abundant knowledge of his aspect.

another very strong contrast to a knight is a thief, one of the most self-serving active classes. vriska, thief of light, stole ideas and knowledge for herself. a thief's challenge is literally learning to share their aspect with others! overall, they are the most possesive of their own aspect and using it on/for themselves.

but when it comes to knights, they can be at a loss for how to use their own aspect on themselves. because like a real knight, they serve their aspect. this serving is done through harnessing their aspect as a weapon, and protecting allies either with that aspect or just protecting allies who lack in that aspect. because of all this self-righteousness and sense of protecting and serving, knights are at a loss for how to connect their aspect to themselves. after all, if you only weaponize your aspect how could you use a weapon on yourself?

a great example of a knight is karkat vantas, knight of blood. blood is representing of relationships, bonds, connections with other people, and sometimes just the blood in your body. physically, karkat is assumingly the weakest troll, a mutant in blood. but his vast knowledge in quadrants and overall with his servitude to his friendships, he protects the bonds he has with his friends and takes great care to them, keeping the group of trolls away from any heavy conflict in sgrub. this attitude to blood also makes him a great leader, able to easily rally even the most uncooperative of his friends and leading them to defeating the black king. but he wasnt very good at reflecting these bonds on himself. karkat often dealt with self-esteem issues and viewing himself as the most physically weak, and this is because of the very blood in his body. he hasn't accepted his own worth in his friendships or on the hemocaste of alternia. so as a result, he hides his blood color and his worth to his own aspect.

another example is dave strider, knight of time. he actively served through time, constantly going through and making stable time loops and overall increasing/exploiting the mechanical (time-related word!!) efficiency of sburb. but a negative aspect on time can be how dave used its "mechanical" attributes in other ways. this was through the emasculating but abusive outlook he was raised on. overall dave had a very rigid childhood, and tries to keep up an almost mechanical stoic outlook because of this.

one of the knights i really wish we got more of was latula pyrope, knight of mind. compared to the previous knights there's practically nothing we can take from her that isn't in the openbound segments. i assume she could have been strategically (mind-related word) helpful throughout the alpha trolls' session, serving the logic of her friend's and logic itself. but she also is seemingly concealing a deeper part of herself. this is shown when latula and porrim meet in openbound, and when porrim tells her to "drop the skater act", she immediately does and starts talking in a more relaxed way. it's obvious latula keeps this over-the-top front to somehow maintain a sort of strategy. overall i just really wish we got more of the alpha trolls somehow T_T!!!

im very new here, what exactly is the runaway au im Very Curious now :eyes:

Hiii okey so basically is an au where the beta trolls (humans here) help Karkat escape from the people who kidnapped him a year ago and are going around the country in a van, trying to find a way to separate Karkat from the alien he has been fused with before things start to become worse for him.

And extended summary of the start of the au is:

Karkat has been missing for around a year before he was pressumed dead after his jacket covered in blood was found in the woods close to the last place he was seen. It was assumed he got attacked by an animal and thats why his body was never found.

The start of the story occurs at his funeral, from Vriska's point of view as she decides to attend the funeral even after she hasnt been friend with the group for around 6 years. They got in a Big fight at the end of highschool and all of them went on their separate ways, theyre 22 now and it's the first reunion as a group after the fight.

The funeral is, depressing as you can expect, Vriska is feeling akward as she is not really friendly with anyone in the group, she tries to talk to Kanaya as she was one of her closest friends when they we're younger but she is a mess emotionally because she was the last person who saw Karkat before he disappeared.

Anyway a lot happens and the funeral is almost over and all of the beta kids are reunited in a room just, not really talking. They tried to but it starts to become an argument until Kanaya's stops them and tells them that if they don't shut up she is kicking them all out because she really can't handle their garbage today.

They calm down and Vriska propose that they go to their old hanging spot, an old abandoned cabin they used to frecuent, and leave some things for him there because it would probably be less depressing that being here. And all of them agree and get inside or Vriska's van. They buy some burgers on the way and arrive at the place.

They go inside and kind of explore the place but decide to just sit and eat like the old times, they talk about old memories, and then Karkat. Things get emotional again and they decide to look for some of his old stuff to see if theyre even there.

Nepeta goes to the back of the cabin, to a room they hadn't check yet, it's dark in there and she uses her flashlight only to see a BIG fucking EGG in there, a slimy and broken egg full of a strange liquid. She is about to enter to investigate but stops herself, she smells blood, she points the light to the ceilling and sees a person, upside down, covered on blood and with eyes completely white.

She screams as that persons starts attacking her. She is fighting back but the person is trying to kill her, thankfully the others come upstairs after hearing her screams and starts to help her.

They fight and it's chaotic and some of them get injured badly but theyre able to tie him up and things calm down. They try to find out what's going, going from a possesion to aliens.

Then the person wakes up, now more calm but very confused, asking what the hell is going and where is he. He then sees the people in front of him and says "KANAYA?" and they get silent, they recognize that voice, it sounded more tired than what they we're used to, but it was Karkat

The one who they just had a funeral for, the one who just attacked them and the one who looks a minute away from dying.

Lets say things got chaotic after that. And thats all of the summary, for now lol, there's still more about the start but I want to draw it :3

Bilbo has noticed a few… Peculier changes in Kili. More irritable with the other dwarves, and more likely to jump into danger, it's like Kili has started getting… Protective.

It started with the trolls, which everyone might see as just a regular bit of protectiveness. Bilbo saw it as that, at first. It was just Kili stepping in to save him, there was nothing off about it.

No, the changes really started happening that night, When Kili gently took his arm and started touching it to check for bruises. Oin had offered to step in and do it but Kili snapped that he could do it just fine.

That was weird enough, yes, but then it got stranger. He started yelling at the other dwarves for every little thing around Bilbo.

Bilbo isn't easily breakable. He's had his fair share of roughhousing when he was younger, he's been hurt more times than he can count, and especially more than your average Hobbit, but even so being around these 13 dwarves can do a number on him.

They don't know their own strength. They push and punch and hug too tightly, and overall it's a painful experience for poor Bilbo who can't seem to catch a break from it all now that he's an official member of the company and has been accepted.

Kili will see this and react… Angrily? Bilbo doesn't understand it and he can't bring himself to ask because what if Kili stops caring? He likes the idea of someone caring for him, and that's why the dwarves including him in things makes him happy.

It's a regular day, they've made camp in some forest that Bilbo can't tell the difference from the last one they were in, and they're sitting by the fire.

Dwalin, in the heat of the moment and while laughing, slams his hand down on Bilbo's shoulder, and Bilbo winces. It's not even that bad, not really, but Bilbo still winces. Dwalin is quick to notice and move his hand and gruffs out a small apology, but apparently to Kili that isn't enough.

Kili quickly gets up and starts to yell, which leads Dwalin to yell, which leads to the other dwarves yelling, and Bilbo quickly gets up and stands between Dwalin and Kili.

"Kili, Kili! Hey, hey, I'm fine!" Bilbo says, putting his hand on the dwarf's chest. Kili is glaring over at Dwalin, Dwalin! Dwalin of all people! For accidentally hurting the Hobbit. It's not as if it's his fault, Dwalin just doesn't know his own strength when it comes to the burglar. Bilbo puts his hand on Kili's chest and pushes him away gently. The look on Kili's face morphing from anger at Dwalin to a little bit of hurt as he moves away from Bilbo and storms off is enough to make Bilbo feel bad for some reason. He huffs and mutters out an apology to Dwalin.

"I'm sorry, I don't know what has gotten into him." Bilbo rambles, talking with his hands. Dwalin though, isn't angry when Bilbo looks up. He just has a small knowing smirk on his face.

"You really don't see it?" Dwalin says, tilting his head slightly. Bilbo throws his arms out in confusion and Dwalin nods to where Kili ran off. "Talk to him."

Bilbo huffs a bit, fixing his jacket. He turns from Dwalin and walks off in the direction Kili went.

Admittedly, he should have thought this through a bit more. He's not good with tracking or finding his way in forests, so as soon as he makes it a bit too far out to hear the other dwarves being rambunxious he realizes he won't find his way back without the beautiful dwarf he's looking for. Bilbo grumbles to himself as he continues to walk and he makes his way to a small stream. It's beautiful, of course. Colorful rocks underneath the water, probably there for years slowly being eaten away at by the flowing water. Bilbo finds Kili sitting at the edge of it, his knees bent up and his arms crossed on top.

It's a sight, for sure. Kili with his hair lying on his shoulders sitting in front of a stream. It's a picture Bilbo would be happy to draw one day.

Bilbo makes his way closer, obviously tripping over stones because he can't be safe for the life of him. Kili doesn't look over when he approaches for a second and Bilbo worries if he speaks up he'll scare the dwarf, but then Kili starts to speak.

"Are you alright?"

Bilbo sighs softly and sits next to him. His shoulder is a bit sore from Dwalin earlier, but other than that he's fine.

"Yes," Bilbo says insistently. "I'm fine. I have been."

Kili stays silent for a while, just staring at the stream. He looks like a kicked puppy.

"I do not understand," Bilbo admits, huffing to himself as he turns from Kili and looks to the water. "I don't understand why you're upset."

"… I just want you to be okay," Kili says softly, looking over at him. Bilbo shakes his head and fiddles with the handkerchief that Kili found him.

"I am," Bilbo says again. Kili looks slightly frustrated again. "You don't have to worry about me so much."

"Yes, I do." Kili snaps, and then instantly deflates. He groans and covers his face. "I'm sorry."

Bilbo watches him for a moment and thinks about Dwalin's questioning earlier.

"Why? Why have you been acting like this? Dwalin is not the only one you've threatened in the past few days. Oin wanted to check a cut of mine and you practically pushed him away. You even snapped at Thorin. The King. Your uncle. What is going on?"

"I- I want you to be okay," Kili says again, and when he sees Bilbo go to argue he speaks again, "I NEED you to be okay."

Bilbo stops for a moment and looks down at the ground. Kili turns to him this time, gesturing with his hands for a second before talking.

"You are… So important. You don't-" Kili laughs, "You don't see it. You don't see how important you are or how much I care and It drives me wild! The trolls capture you, hurt you, and all you do after is apologize to us! Apologize to us? We're the ones who got you in that mess, to begin with! You get hurt by Dwalin and your first instinct is to let it go and you don't care about yourself! What happens when someone threatens to kill you and you just sit back and let it happen and then you die and you leave me-"

Bilbo looks at him in shock, floored by the rant but especially the last part. He goes to speak but Kili interrupts him again.

"You are… You're…" Kili doesn't know how to proceed and deflates. "You're you. That's why I'm worried because you're you and we- I need you. I-I love you."

Bilbo doesn't know what to say. He must look ridiculous with his mouth gaping and a confused look on his face, his eyes teary. He can't force a sentence out as he lets out a harsh breath. He instead reaches forward and takes the dwarf's hand. Kili holds Bilbo's hand and for a moment the only sounds in the forest are the wind blowing through the trees, and the water flowing next to them.

"You can't…" Bilbo says, confused. Kili… The nephew of the rightful king under the mountain. He's royalty. He's a part of something much greater than himself, there is no way that Kili loves him.

"I do," Kili says quietly. he turns from Bilbo and shakes his head. "I understand if you do not feel the same, but all I ask is that you understand why I am protective of you. I love you, and to me, you're more important than any piece of gold in that mountain."

"I love you too, Kili… But you can't fight your own kin for me." Bilbo says gently. Kili sighs and nods and affirmative. Bilbo smiles and leans forward. "Now, I'm not sure what Dwarves do when they admit their feelings but Hobbits have a fun way of doing so."

Kili's bashful look turns to a smirk.

"What did you have in mind, burglar?" Kili teases, leaning closer.

"Oh, shut it you fool." Bilbo laughs, rolling his eyes. He leans forward and kisses him quickly before pulling back. He abruptly stands and gestures around them. "Now, I have no clue where we are. Guide me, adventurer."

Kili beams up at him and he gets up, and they make their way through the forest.

They have a lot to work out, a lot of people to talk to, a King (and most importantly uncle to confess to), but for now they have each other. and oh, that's the best adventure Bilbo could have asked for.

✨️:Most of them are named after objects or things! Sputnik is named after Sputnik 1 which was the first artificial satellite to orbit the earth!!I thought it was fitting since he's a space aspect while Sequoia is named after the Giant Sequoia tree which get really tall and old and is also a nod to his Warcraft counterpart who lives in the forest!

🍕:Okay so Admittedly alot of the food they eat prior to meeting their troll charges is just like the standard medieval meals(and like ALOT of raw meat in Leprechauns like Amie's case) but after being introduced to new modern foods its unanimous that they all enjoy troll/human junk food and sweets! Rictus however is a special case since he doesn't have a jaw so he enjoys anything blended up or shredded up enough

Sputnik:He likes collecting old vinyls and also vintage wines, he considers this classy but he just gets shit-faced and falls asleep before he can enjoy the music

Jackal:He brews his own potions! Would I drink them?Absolutely not. But he dabbles in Alchemy alot. Another one of his hobbies is also pretending to be possesed and scaring people in public

Rictus:Photography! Post-sburb he probably just saw someone doing it and instantly became intrigued and just picked it up. His photos are usually very grainy and grungy but I feel like there's a certain charm to it. He also likes to play dead when he meets new people to get their reaction

Amie:He loves making jewelry for his friends! It's mostly things like bracelets fashioned out of bones and teeth but when he scavenges things like gems he'll use them too! He also enjoys treasure hunting with another one of my leprechauns!(who I still need to introduce-)

Sequoia:Okay realistically his real favorite hobby is napping but somebody would probably tell him that isn't a "real hobby". His actual real hobby is fishing and camping! He can turn into different lusus so it's sort of cheating sometimes but he loves anything having to do with the outdoors and can tell you everything about the critters he finds!
